Hariko no Tora - "paper tiger" - Origin: Osaka & Chogosonshiji temple on Mt. Shigi. (between Osaka & Nara Prefectrues)

• About this Charm:

Similar To ManekiNeko, Shiragaki Tanuki & Fukusuke they are often used as a welcoming charm, seen at the entrance of businesses, These paper tigers with nodding heads are made traditionally using the Hariko technique using extra thin layered washi paper on clay or wood.) - These techniques predate the Edo period (approx: 1615–1868) and date back as afar as Muromachi period. (1336-1573) they are often used to bring in business (& victory!) They're also often given to Children on Childrens day (May 5th) with the hope that they'll grow up Courageous, strong and healthy!

• As the legend goes: Bishamonten (lucky god of war/Guardian of Buddhism.) appeared before prince Shotoku-taishi at the hour of the tiger, on the day of the tiger, on the year of the tiger and lead the prince to a decisive victory over the Mononobe clan! – After that to display his gratitude the prince had Chogosonshiji temple built atop mount shigisan. – Today: said temple is also home to the world's largest paper mache tiger!!!

...they are also particularly popular before elections as well!
